Vandhiyathevan and Kundhavai’s relationship

Ponniyin Selvan

Vandhiyathevan and Kundhavai’s relationship is defined in this exchange by admiration, wit, and an acknowledged intimacy that must be handled discreetly. His language casts her as the radiant full moon whose beauty has already fixed his attention; her brother’s response makes clear that Vandhiyathevan’s regard is not entirely a secret within the family, even as courtly ambitions make it politically sensitive.

Admiration and the Full-Moon Metaphor

When teased about the power of women’s charms, Vandhiyathevan clarifies that he is not speaking of Manimekalai. Having been dazzled by the full moon, he asks, could his sight now be held by “a flickering minmini, a fluttering insect?” Asked to name this full moon, he identifies Kundhavai as “Pazhaiyarai’s Ilaiya Piratti, of course.” The metaphor makes his preference unmistakable while allowing him to express it with the lightness of a compliment rather than a formal declaration.

Earlier Service and Familiar Teasing

Kundhavai’s brother answers with mock indignation at the audacity of Vandhiyathevan’s feelings, invoking the kings and emperors who seek her hand. Yet the rebuke gives way to recognition: he recalls having sent Vandhiyathevan to Kundhavai with an olai and says that, by all accounts, he acquitted himself in a manner highly satisfactory to her. The exchange therefore links Vandhiyathevan’s present admiration to an earlier personal service and suggests that Kundhavai received that service well. It does not establish a formal commitment between them; instead, their connection appears through his praise and the brother’s teasing acknowledgment of their prior contact.

Courtly Ambition and Discretion

The brother’s indulgence has a limit: he insists that no hint of the matter reach Parthibendran, who dreams of becoming a Chozha son-in-law. Vandhiyathevan’s admiration for Kundhavai thus sits within a court where marriage is entangled with rank and ambition. The warning gives their banter a cautious edge. His feelings can be voiced playfully in this conversation, but the prospect of other men’s political hopes makes discretion part of the relationship’s circumstances.
